Anti-Vir - Another popular free antivirus program, similar to AVG. Very popular among the "techie" set, as is AVG.
Anti-Spyware Programs:
AVG Anti-Spyware - Also from Grisoft, is a great antispyware program. We suggest you try the free version, then if you like it, buy the full version. Why? Because the full version protects your computer full time and automatically.
Spybot S&D - One of the best known and loved programs. It not only removes spyware, but also inoculates your system from re-infection!
Spy Sweeper - The Top-Rated Anti-Spyware program for the last 4 years! It's only $29.95 and worth every penny. It runs full time and protects your system from almost ebery type of attack and infection. We use this on our computers.
System Cleanup Programs:
C-Cleaner - A great tool for clearing out temporary files, cookies, browser history. It even cleans the WIndows registry!
Cleanup - A simpler, but just as powerful utility as C-Cleaner. It cleans up all user accounts. It doesn't clean the registry though.
Websites With Information, News, Reviews and Tips:
This is the online version of the number one magazine for computer users, covering both home and business computing issues. It has tons of informational articles, computing news, product reviews (PC's, printers, monitors, etc.), how-to's, tips and tricks.
The online version of the popular magazine geared toward home users. It focuses on the novice-to-medium experienced user. If you're a novice, this is probably the best place to go to learn about computers and other technology.
This site is chock full of technology news, product reviews and tips for all levels of users. It covers more than just computers. It covers PDA's MP3 players, home electronics (like TV's and stereos) and business technologies.
This site is part of C-Net mentioned above. Here you can search for and download just about any kind of program you want to try. Most are either free or trial software. It's a great way to "try before you buy". If you are fed up with pesky Windows behavior, turn to the online component of O'Reilly's Annoyances series of books. With good humor and clever tips, the site explains how to eliminate (or at least deal with) the frustrating, the repetitive, and the unnecessary in your computer's operating system and applications.
Initially a geek's site dedicated to news about processors, motherboards and other hardware, Tom's has expanded its scope in recent years to include mobile devices, tech business news, and even gaming. It's a little more "high-end" than the other sites, but Tom's remains one of the best tech resources on the Web.
Most hoax e-mail is blatantly phony, but some scams are harder to spot. HoaxBusters' running tally of fake scary warnings and virus bulletins can help you figure out if those ominous-sounding emails are for real or not. It can also help you avoid identity-stealing "phishing" scams and email viruses. It's also just plain interesting reading.
